DuPage County Court-house Wedding

A DuPage County Courthouse wedding ceremony is a romantic, beautiful, simple, and affordable way to begin a marriage. Weddings are performed every Friday and check-in is at 11:30am.  The DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton has a system that makes the wedding experience fun and relaxed while still being official and romantic.  Elopements are some of my favorite sessions; It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway:

Love is always beautiful. I support and encourage anyone who chooses love, regardless of religion, race, or orientation.

PREP:  There are details on the 18th Judicial Ciruit Webpage but basically, within 1 – 60 days of the wedding date you will need to obtain a marriage license together ($35 @ 421 N County Farm Road, Wheaton M-F 8a-4:30p).  This wedding is really affordable, but it is still important to spend a little energy to make it special.  Consider bringing flowers, rings, and clothes that coordinate with each other.  Or Don’t!  The best part about these weddings is that each love is so different and unique!  Whether you show up in jeans or formal wear, you will want to remember the happiness of this day and the outfits won’t matter.

ARRIVAL:  There is a metal detector and search before entering the courthouse.  Although there are signs all over that say “no cell phones,” people for weddings are allowed to bring their cell phones with strict instructions that pictures can’t be taken in the hallways (which is a bummer because the hallways are really cool).  Make a left at the end of the hall and stand in line for the 11:30am check-in (cost is $10 and both partners need to be present at check-in).  The line can be quite long but fun.  Often 50+ happy couples are getting married on the same day!  Arriving before 10:45a will assure you a spot nearer to the front.  The atmosphere is light and happy as everyone is there for such an exciting time.

WAITING OUR TURN:  I usually arrive somewhere between 11 and 11:15 and wait inside the jury room for you to be checked in. The room is crowded but usually, we can find a nice corner. I’ll text you my exact location so that you don’t need to wander around. The jury room is bright and comfortable with wonderful views of the pond. While we are waiting for your number to be called, I snap a bunch of posed and candid pictures and listen for your number.

THE CEREMONY:  About 5 judges perform ceremonies on Fridays.  At 11:45, they start calling 5 couples every 15 minutes and your group heads over to a separate room. You are the only couple in the room. The private rooms are clean with a few chairs set up and you are more than welcome to bring guests or it can just be the 3 of us.  The ceremony portion takes about 10 minutes but strikes the perfect balance of meaningful and relaxed.  It goes by quickly but not at all rushed.  It is actually quite beautiful and feels momentous.

AFTERWARD:  I plan to spend from 11:30 – 1:30p Friday at the DuPage County Courthouse.  If everything goes smoothly, we usually have plenty of time left in our 2-hour window to take pictures after the ceremony as well.  We can head outside the courthouse or to a nearby park or even to the restaurant where you’ll be having your post-wedding lunch.  I’ll talk you through options after the ceremony.  If things run long, no worries, I stay until your ceremony is done but additional pictures outside after 1:30 would incur a charge ($250 an hour based on availability).

VIEWING:  I know you will be excited so I try to edit these quickly!  You will have a single image to post on social media within 24 hours.  The remainder of your images will be ready to view within 2 weeks.  I do make elopements a priority.  From time to time, the album pages run a week or so behind the images.  Professional products usually arrive within 2 – 4 weeks of placing the order.

Eloping at a place other than DuPage County Courthouse?  Shoot me an email and we can chat through options!
